An Ever-Increasing Population

There has been an unprecidented growth in the gay, lesbian, and bisexual community within recent years. Between the 2000 and 2005 census the population of gays, lesbians, and bisexuals increased by 30% to 8.8 million Americans. There are now gay and lesbian men and women living in every county in the United States. With such large numbers of homosexuals still increasing in America, it seems that more and more support is gained everyday for gay rights including gay marriage. It seems only a matter of time before the majority of Americans who are against gay marriage will soon become the minority. We all, as citizens of this nation, need to stand up for what we believe and fight for our beliefs.

The facts that you have presented about the population of homosexuals in the United States are good indications of how much of the population will consist of homosexuals in the future. Although I do believe the population will continue to grow, I do not think that it will become a majority. The institution of marriage between a man and a woman will always remain traditional. Homosexuality can only become more and more accepted as a different lifestyle, but not as one that is the norm.

A 30% increase is a lot in 5 years. Because of the minority/majority thing I am afraid it is going to create a lot of anger and separation between people in our country. This is the UNITED states of America, I want to be united on this issue, but the problem is this isn't one that can really be talked out it seems because it involves so much---religious matters, laws, money, tradition, morals---I hope everything will turn out for the best.

Alleyezond, I'm glad that you see that there is an ever-increasing number of gays, lesbians, and bisexuals. I hope that you understand that in order for the marriage between a man a woman to remain the norm, we must stand up for our beliefs to protect this sacred bond of matrimony. The true institution of marriage will not protect itself.

Rosebud, I agree completely with your statement regarding the anger and seperation between American citizens on this issue of gay marriage. I always had the notion that this was the way it was but since I've been working on this blog I have come to see an even greater divide between Americans. The worst part is that, like you mentioned, the issue involves so much--religion, laws, money, traditioin, and morals. Considering the fact that very few people are willing to change in thier moral and religious views, I see no immediate solution to this problem.

There are not more gays, just more people willing to "come out" because its more socially acceptable to be gay. How are your rights affected by increasing number of gay people? That is what I really do not understand - I am a straight married woman with children, and gay marriage does not threaten the strength of my marriage in any way. I think the religious concept of marriage remains completely unchanged by whatever happens politically.
