The Federal Marriage Amendment (FMA)

Currently, the right to civil marriage is governed by individual states and not the national government. The Federal Marriage Amendment (FMA) would take this power from the states and put it in the hands of the Federal Government. The FMA, also known as the Marriage Protection Amendment, has been introduced in Congress 3 times (2003, 2004, and 2005/06). The '05/'06 version of the bill is word for word with the '04 version with exception to the title and would define marriage as strictly between a man and a woman. Though the proposed amendments have gradually gained support, none have yet been passed by Congress. I personally am in support of this bill. I believe that the definition of marriage should be permanetly set as part of the Constitution as a union between one man and one woman.

I would agree with you that marriage is between a man and a woman. I personally think that homosexuals should not be allowed to become married in a church because that is totally against all Christian views. At the same time, the government should not get involved in such issues because everyone does have their rights and freedom to live as they wish according to the Constitution. If this was added to the constitution that they aren't allowed to become married, it would be a contradiction to everything that America is supposed to be about. With this dilemma, how do we as a country resolve this issue?

I think that marriage should be protected as between one man and one woman as well. You need a man and a woman to reproduce and contribute to the world and population.

Baseball17, I guess all I can say to your comment is...I agree. Marriage between a man and a woman is how it has always been and believe it needs to stay that way. And you are right, without relationships and marriages between men and women how would we ever reproduce and continue the human race?

Vilese11, I don't think that adding a constitutional amendment establishing marriage as between a man and a woman is a contadiction to everything America stands for. You say that everyone has the right to live as they wish according to the Constitution as if adding an amendment to the Costitution establishing marriage would deny that freedom homosexuals. They are and still would be free to choose to be homosexuals, they simply would not be able to be married. Their freedom to choose is still intact, but they are not able to choose the consequences of their choices.
